1. Paint stripping: during the first stage, the item undergoes a preliminary immersion wash that removes the initial layers of paint from the wood surface. This is a gentle, conservation-based process, as it removes only the surface layer of paint without corroding, stripping or altering the underlying wood. During the second stage, the window or door is carefully sanded by hand several times using traditional orbital sanders, progressing from coarse to fine-grit sandpaper until the entire item is completely stripped back and perfectly smooth to the touch.
2. The unfinished item then undergoes the necessary joinery work, depending on the condition and deterioration of the wood. This may include realignment, dowelling and repairs using small bonded inserts, fillers and other techniques. Uprights, crosspieces or slats that are severely damaged and beyond repair may be replaced using wood of the same species.
3. Four-coat Adler HighRes water-based finishing system: this consists of one coat of impregnating primer applied by immersion, one intermediate primer coat applied by immersion, one spray-applied high-build primer and one spray-applied finishing coat.
4. We had one of our restored windows certified by Adler. Based on the tests performed, Adler issued a warranty for the ID 520 Adler HighRes coating system. Our company can therefore provide a five-year warranty on the paint finish when it is applied according to the method described above.
